Engaging in physical activities and maintaining regular exercise routines offers numerous health benefits. Moving your body daily can boost your energy, enhance mental clarity, reduce stress, improve mental well-being, and help prevent common illnesses such as coronary artery disease (CAD), stroke, diabetes, and various types of cancer.

The AHA (American Heart Association) and CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommend that adults (ages 18-64) engage in 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week. This can be divided into 30 minutes a day for 5 days or 22 minutes daily. You can also distribute this time into smaller intervals throughout the day. Additionally, muscle-strengthening activities are advised 2 days a week.

There are four categories of exercises: aerobic (cardio), strength (resistance), flexibility/stretching, and balance.

Aerobic (cardio)

Engaging in these activities enhances the health of your heart and lungs, boosts your circulation, and increases physical stamina. Examples include brisk walking, running, cycling, swimming, and rowing. Additionally, you can use elliptical machines and stair climbers.

Strength (resistance)

Emphasizes developing and preserving muscle mass. It can additionally enhance bone strength. Examples include weightlifting, using resistance bands, kettlebells, and bodyweight exercises such as push-ups, squats, lunges, and planks.

Flexibility / Stretching

Relaxes tense muscles and maintains their flexibility. It facilitates smooth joint movement, enhances posture, and alleviates discomfort. Examples include yoga, Pilates, and static stretches, where a muscle is held in an extended position for 10-30 seconds.

Balance

The aim is to enhance the strength of core and leg muscles. These exercises help maintain stability and prevent falls. Examples include Tai Chi, single leg stand, and heel-toe walk.

Mixing or switching between these activities can make physical movement more enjoyable and fun while enhancing your health and well-being.
